What´s New with Barracuda NG Firewall 5.2.4?
Firmware release version 5.2.4 of Barracuda NG Firewall comes with a variety of new features and
improvements that are described below.
Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) Support
Besides OSPF and RIP, with Barracuda NG Firewall version 5.2.4 it becomes possible to make use of
the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) for routing. Therefore, the former OSPF/RIP Service has been
renamed to OSPF/RIP/BGP.
BGP is the protocol backing the core routing decisions on the Internet. It maintains a table of IP
networks or 'prefixes' which designate network reachability among autonomous systems. It is
described as a path vector protocol. BGP does not use traditional Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP)
metrics, but makes routing decisions based on path, network policies and/or rulesets. For this reason,
it is more appropriately termed a reachability protocol rather than routing protocol. It allows fully
decentralized routing.
Most Internet service providers must use BGP to establish routing between one another. Therefore,
BGP is one of the most important protocols of the Internet. Very large private IP networks use BGP
internally. An example would be the joining of a number of large OSPF (Open Shortest Path First)
networks where OSPF by itself would not scale to size. Another reason to use BGP is multihoming a
network for better redundancy either to multiple access points of a single ISP (RFC 1998) or to multiple
ISPs.
Barracuda Web Security Flex for F10 Rev B
Barracuda NG Firewall F10 Rev B units are now capable of using Barracuda Web Security Flex, the
cloud-based web filtering and security service.
DNS Blacklisting
With Barracuda NG Firewall firmware version 5.2.4, it is possible to maintain a list of blacklisted DNS
hostnames. The IP addresses of a matching host can either be replaced by a configurable IP address
or the DNS reply can be changed to NX_DOMAIN.
